Valve has announced cooperation with the Chinese company Perfect World in the framework of creating a version of the Steam store specifically for Chinese users.
The new service will be called Steam China. It will allow regional players and developers to “gain access to Steam’s extensive library of games and entertainment.”
Perfect World’s assistance will consist in the launch promotion, marketing and, as far as can be understood from the available quote, working with the line of games available on the site. The cooperation will not affect the operations of the main Steam platform in any way.
VentureBeat considers the announcement to be Valve’s response to last year’s launch by Tencent of the WeGame platform, which is the Chinese equivalent of Steam.
Prior to the announcement of Steam China, Valve had already worked with Perfect World. The latter is engaged in operating such games as Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in the Middle Kingdom.
Nothing is known about the launch date of Steam China yet.
