The example of Ubisoft shows why some publishers are so interested in developing DLC and implementing microtransactions. Downloadable content, in-game items, subscriptions and advertising accounted for 35% of Ubisoft’s revenue in the past six months.
This became known from the publisher’s reports for April-September 2018. During this period, Ubisoft got rich by € 746.1 million. €257 million of this amount was brought by trading digital copies of games, €262 million came from DLC and microtransactions.
Thus, the total revenue from digital sales in the specified period amounted to €519.1 million. Their main driver was the racing The Crew 2. The initial sales of Far Cry 5 were not taken into account when compiling, as they relate to the previous financial year.
Ubisoft expects that for the full fiscal year it will earn about €2 billion from the sale of its games.
