The owner of itch.io, Leaf Corcoran, provided a detailed comment regarding yesterday’s website outages.

On December 9, the website itch.io, a digital store specializing in indie games, stopped working. According to the platform’s administration, the domain registrar closed access to it after receiving a complaint from toy manufacturer Funko.

In the digital store itch.io, not only indie games are sold, but also game assets. The platform’s administration has introduced a new requirement for creators of the latter — all assets created using generative AI must be tagged accordingly.

Indie developer Caro Asercion organized a charity bundle on itch.io to help foundations that fight for the right to abortion. In total, over 600 authors of the platform took part in the fundraising.

Owners of a store with indie games itch.io opposed the NFT. According to the management of the portal, non—interchangeable tokens are fraud, and the companies supporting them think exclusively about their own profits.

Less than a month ago, an application appeared in the Epic Games Store Itch.io — stora for indie games without DRM. As Apple noted, the standards of this site are very different from the standards of the Epic Games Store. In particular in Itch.io there is a Sisterly Lust game that includes “a list of fetishes with words that should not be uttered in federal court.” Although Epic Games itself does not encourage such content.

Now you can download not only games, but also software from the Epic Games Store. The store even has a special section for them. There are only six programs available in it so far, but Epic Games promises that there will be more of them over time.
