The number of monthly active Steam users has reached 90 million. Valve representatives told about this at the Melbourne Games Week conference.
Last year, the monthly figure did not exceed 67 million people. Now Steam bypasses a number of other digital trading platforms in terms of the number of active users. Here are the numbers they have:
- PlayStation Store — 80 million people (with 73 million PS4 sold);
- Xbox Live — 59 million people;
- Origin — 50 million people.
Valve also noted that 47 million people use Steam on the day. Since last year, this figure has increased by 14 million.
The influx of gamers from China contributed to the growth in the number of Steam users. Last year, there were 15 million Chinese players on the platform, now there are already 30 million. For them, Steam is a chance to purchase games that are banned in Chinese digital stores. The Chinese make up a third of the users of the online game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sold on Steam. In January, in the wake of its popularity, a record of simultaneous users in the store was recorded: 18.5 million people.
However, now Valve and publisher Perfect World are preparing to launch the Chinese version of Steam. And it will feature only those games to which the Chinese censors have no complaints.
