Mike Rose, founder of the independent game publisher No more robots, believes that many indie developers expect the impossible from the sales of their games on Steam. For example, they seriously expect to sell 1.3 million copies in the first month.

Mike wrote about this on his Twitter.

According to Rose, independent developers regularly write to him about such figures. Based on these letters, he compiled a small table of expected indie game sales for the first month.

  • from 1.3 million copies sold – an optimistic scenario
  • about 500 thousand copies sold – realistic expectations
  • less than 150 thousand copies sold – everything is very bad

Rose believes that the exaggerated expectations of many novice developers are due to the fact that they are trying to assess the possible sales of their titles according to the Steam Spy service.

Independent developer Rami Ismail also believes that these dreams are far from reality. Based on the data of colleagues and friends of developers, Ismail compiled his own indie game sales rating on Steam during the first month.

  • good sales – from 7.5 thousand copies;
  • realistic sales – 2.5 thousand copies;
  • low sales – less than 750 copies.
