Valve had to listen to a lot of unflattering reviews about the Artifact card. The players who got access to the beta of the game today were unpleasantly struck by the monetization system.

By purchasing Artifact for $20, the player receives a starter set of cards. But he can expand his card collection only for real currency. There are several ways to get new cards:

  • take part in special modes and events, but first you need to buy entrance tickets for real;
  • purchase loot boxes for $2, which contain a maximum of 12 cards.

Because of the loot boxes, the player risks clogging his collection with duplicates: most of the cards in the loot boxes turn out to be starting ones, and it is impossible to get rid of them. The only type of trading in the game is selling cards to other players with the ability to set their own price, but starting cards are usually not needed by anyone. Note that Valve takes a percentage from each purchase.

Users criticized the system, dubbing it: “Pay for everything you do.” Valve had to react urgently, so it announced that it will update the beta version of Artifact today. The opportunity to play with friends in draft mode in any custom tournament will be added, and the usual mode will also appear, which does not require an entrance ticket. And until the end of the beta test, according to Valve’s assurances, the game will have a system for processing unnecessary cards and duplicates into entrance tickets, so that even the weakest card can serve the player.

At the same time, Valve did not comment on issues related to in-game trading and loot boxes.
