Nintendo and Microsoft have launched a joint advertising campaign in honor of the release of the Minecraft multiplatform update. “It’s better together,” the competitors assure, while Sony continues to resist and does not allow playing under the same account on different platforms.

Criticism of Sony’s position on the issue of cross-play has not stopped for several weeks. It all started with the Fortnite Battle Royale, released in early June on the Nintendo Switch. Gamers are faced with the fact that they cannot launch the game on Switch under their account if they have previously played with it on PlayStation.

Yesterday, Microsoft and Nintendo, who support the idea of cross-play, released a video on which Minecraft is played on Xbox and Switch:

It is difficult to interpret this video otherwise than as the next stage of console wars and the joint strike of opponents against the industry leader. As of December 2017, Sony has sold 73.6 million copies of the PS4. Xbox One has more than half the sales – 33.3 million copies. Switch has sold 17.8 million copies, but the console was released four years later than the PS4 and Xbox One.

Sony has not officially responded to this injection yet, but there is every reason to believe that the company may never agree to cross-play. As Polygon notes, this is due to how revenue from purchases within multiplatform games is distributed. If a player in the same Minecraft buys an item through his Microsoft account, Sony will receive only a small part of the proceeds, although the item can be used when playing from any platform.
