In January-March of this year, video games worth ₽1 billion were sold in the Russian retail. Sales of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo consoles for the same period amounted to 2.4 billion rubles. This is reported by the Russian retailer “M.Video” together with the M.GAME project and the Eldorado company.

Video Game Sales

In the first quarter of this year, 500 thousand copies of games for consoles were sold. In money, this is more than ₽1 billion. Compared to the first quarter of last year, there is both an increase in units and in money — by 11% and 5%, respectively.

We are talking about both retail titles and physical versions of games purchased online (120 thousand copies were sold this way) and digital codes distributed on payment cards (200 million rubles were spent on them).

The report highlights the high growth rates of sales of games for the Nintendo Switch. In the first quarter of 2018, they were 40% more than a year earlier. However, 70% of all sales in the segment of games for consoles of the latest generation account for projects for PlayStation 4. Another 23% of the market for Xbox One.

The game leader in the number of copies sold on all consoles is FIFA 18. In second place — GTA V.

Console Sales

The number of consoles sold in the first three months of 2018 amounted to 100 thousand. In monetary terms, this is 2.4 billion rubles. “M.Video” claims that compared to the same period in 2017, sales in units increased by a third.

Dmitry Sukhanov, Director of Retail Sales at Eldorado, is confident that growth will only increase in the near future: “Consoles will continue to grow in the near future due to the demand for 4K-enabled devices and VR accessories, thanks to which users will get a more perfect image and fully immerse themselves in the process.”

While sales of video games and consoles are growing, the opposite situation is observed in the PC segment. Sales of computer games in the first quarter of 2018 were 2.5 times worse than a year earlier. This applies to both physical retail and online sales of physical copies.
