Microsoft has acquired GitHub, the world’s largest hosting and collective software development platform with an audience of 28 million people. The transaction amount was $7.5 billion.
Rumors about the impending sale of GitHub appeared in the media on June 3, and today Microsoft itself confirmed the purchase in a publication on the company’s official website.
Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will pay for GitHub with its shares. The deal is scheduled to close by the end of 2018.
Microsoft Vice President Nat Friedman will become the new head of GitHub, while the current CEO of the service, Chris Wanstrath, will take the position of the company’s partner in the development of software development.
GitHub is the third largest disclosed purchase in Microsoft’s history. In 2011, the company bought the Skype messenger for $8.5 billion, and in 2016 it acquired the business social network LinkedIn for a record $26.6 billion.
