Nordisk Film, which became a minority shareholder of Avalanche Studios last year, has now acquired the entire studio. The transaction amount was $103 million (€89 million).
The acquisition of Avalanche Studios was the next step in Nordisk Film’s large-scale campaign to introduce it into the gaming market. The film giant is purposefully investing in leading Scandinavian game studios: over the past two years, it has also invested in DanishReto-Moto and Star Stable Entertainment, which are engaged in the development of popular MMO games.
However, if before the film company invested relatively small amounts of funds, receiving minority shares, now it has made the first large—scale purchase on the market – and the largest in its 111-year history.
Nordisk Film has gained control of an experienced and successful team. Avalanche Studios has been on the gaming market for 15 years — the company was formed by two former employees of Paradox Interactive and during this time expanded its staff from six to 320 employees. A week before the announcement of joining Nordisk Film, the studio announced the opening of a third office in Malmo.
Nordisk Film is not going to interfere in the affairs of the experienced team — the whole team will remain in their places, maintain full creative independence and continue to work according to the previous strategy: to develop and release open-world games on its own Apex game engine. Studio hits such as The Hunter, Mad Max, Just Cause and Renegade Ops have been developed on this engine.
Recently it became known that the RAGE 2 shooter, which will be published by Bethesda Softworks, was created on the Apex engine. ID Software studio developed the game together with Avalanche Studios.
