New details about the PlayStation 5 release were revealed by Bloomberg. According to him, the Sony console will be released on time, but in a limited edition. COVID-19 should be blamed for the latter.
According to the media, Sony has decided to reduce the volume of primary PS5 shipments. By March 2021, 5-6 million systems will come off the assembly lines. For comparison: PS4 sold 7.5 million copies in the first six months.
Why was this decision made? According to a Bloomberg source, there are two reasons. One of them is related to marketing, the other is related to the high cost of the set—top box.
Promotion
The pandemic has not affected Sony’s production facilities.
But it prevented the company’s technical specialists from monitoring the preparation of factories in China. According to Bloomberg, the start of production is scheduled for June this year.
In addition, Sony had to adjust the PS5 promotion plan, the publication clarifies. Due to the coronavirus, the public presentation of the new console may not take place. For the same reason, many major game dev conferences have failed.
The release date of the new console, however, has not changed. It is scheduled for the end of 2020, the PS5 will be released in all regions at once. But, as Sony predicts, the coronavirus will cause delays in the production of games for this system.
Cost
Sony has not yet named the price tag of its newest console. Bloomberg analysts believe that it may grow due to the rise in price of components. The latter, again, have risen in price due to the coronavirus.
As the developers of PS5 games interviewed by the publication stated, the console can cost $ 499-549. This is from 37 thousand to 40.5 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate. The PS4 cost $399 at the start.
There is another version: according to the forecast of Macquarie Capital analysts, the PS5 will cost $450. Competition with Microsoft may force Sony to sell the console at a loss.
