The Icelandic studio CCP has curtailed work on projects in virtual reality and does not plan to develop new similar titles.

The company explained this decision by the restructuring of the business and the fact that the VR market is not yet sufficiently developed.

“I am very proud of our achievements in the VR segment, but CCP will not financially invest in virtuality until we are sure that our investments will pay off,” said Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CEO of CCP.

In the coming weeks, the management of CCP intends to close the Atlanta branch and transfer its staff to London, sell the office in Newcastle and reduce the number of employees of the Shanghai branch.

The Chinese branch is also refocusing on business development in the local market and working with local partners.

According to the Icelandic business publication mbl, the layoffs affected over 100 people. CCP has promised unemployment benefit packages and job placement assistance for all those affected by the cuts.

After the restructuring, CCP will focus on developing games for PC and mobile platforms in the EVE Online universe. The company confirmed work on the PC shooter Project Nova and the new mobile game Project Aurora.

Despite the refusal to create new VR titles, Petursson promised to maintain support for existing virtual reality games – EVE Valkyre and Gunjack.
