Microsoft reported for the fourth fiscal quarter (ended June 30). The revenue of its gaming division reached $3.6 billion. An important role in this was played by the Xbox Series X and S, which turned out to be the fastest-selling consoles in the company’s history.
Key data for the quarter:
- Microsoft’s total revenue for the quarter was $46.2 billion, which is 21% more year-on-year. And the net profit of the entire company reached $16.5 billion — 47% more than a year ago;
- Microsoft’s gaming division earned $3.6 billion, an increase of 11% compared to the fourth quarter of last year;
- revenue from sales of gaming hardware increased by 172%. In many ways, this result is due to the success of the Xbox Series X|S. As noted by the company’s CEO Satya Nadella, these consoles sold faster than any other in the history of Xbox;
- Analyst Daniel Ahmad estimated that the total sales of the Xbox Series X|S on June 30, 2021 amounted to 6.5 million consoles. For comparison, during the same period, the Xbox One sold 5.7 million copies, and the Xbox 360 — 5 million copies;
- at the same time, revenue from Xbox content and services fell by 4% compared to last year. Microsoft explained this by reducing the number of new products made by third-party studios. Nevertheless, the number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers has grown, although the company has not said how much.
