Genshin Impact has been around for a year now, and it still holds the title of one of the highest-grossing mobile games. Sensor Tower analysts estimated that during the premiere year, the title earned $2 billion only in the App Store and Google Play.
Recall that Genshin Impact was released on September 28, 2020 and immediately attracted the attention of gamers from all over the world. According to analysts, its release was among the most successful launches in the history of mobile. Genshin Impact earned its first $100 million in just 12 days, and $1 billion in less than six months (excluding Chinese Android stores).
As for the indicators for the starting year, for comparison, analysts cited two other successful games: Pokémon GO and Lineage M. The revenue of both is much less than that of Genshin Impact. The Pokemon game earned only $1.1 billion in its first 12 months, while Lineage M earned $1.2 billion.
Now Genshin Impact is the third highest—grossing mobile game in the world. For the period from September 28, 2020 to September 27, 2021, it lost in revenue only to Honor of Kings ($2.9 billion) and PUBG Mobile ($2.8 billion). However, if China is excluded from the statistics, then Genshin Impact becomes the highest-grossing mobile project.
The main markets for player spending for Genshin Impact were China ($577 million or 28.6%), Japan (23.7%) and the USA (21%).
Most of the global revenue (61.8%) of the game was brought by App Store users. But if Chinese gamers are also removed from the data here, then Google Play breaks out ahead, whose users generated 53.6% of the title’s revenue.
