On September 30, Microsoft successfully closed the first fiscal quarter of 2021. The revenue of the gaming segment alone turned out to be better than ever before in the history of the company’s first quarters.
The main thing from the Microsoft report:
- The total revenue of the business segment responsible for Windows, Surface and games grew by 6% year-on—year to $11.8 billion. According to the company, games have become one of the two drivers of growth. What was the second driver is not specified;
- Revenue from Xbox content and services reached $649 million, an increase of 30% compared to the same period last year. You need to thank for a good result, including the activity of Game Pass subscribers;
- at the same time, revenue from iron sank by 27%. But here we must remember that officially sales of the Xbox Series S / X have not yet started, and the opportunity to pre-order appeared only in early September. As Microsoft itself predicts, in the next quarter, console revenue will grow by about 40%;
- gaming revenues in the first quarter of 2021 amounted to $3.1 billion, which is 22% more than last year. And this is not the limit, according to the American corporation. In the second quarter, Microsoft plans to earn 20% more on games again*
*The forecast does not include ZeniMax games, since the approximate closing date of the transaction is the third or fourth fiscal quarter of 2021.
It should be noted that analyst Daniel Ahmad has already commented on the Microsoft report. He called the first quarter the best in history for the gaming segment of the corporation. Ahmad also pointed out that the annual revenue of the segment could set a new record relative to the past 12 years.
