The share of Android in the American smartphone market has grown to 49% in the first quarter of 2012, according to experts of the advertising company Millennial Media. So Google’s operating system continues to be the “king of the mountain”; also in the US, 15 of the top 20 mobile devices run on Android
As for iOS, according to the data generated on the basis of advertising views, the share of this platform has not changed since February of this year, it still stands at 33% in the American smartphone market.
The two percent growth of Android occurred due to a decrease in the share of Blackberry, which lost some of its users over the spring. A very slight increase – by 1% – was observed in Windows Phone. Yes, Symbian disappeared from the top quite predictably.
Speaking of tablets
Despite the fact that the iPhone 4S remains the most popular mobile device in the United States, 15 of the top 20 mobile devices run on Android. A year ago, the ratio was different – 10 out of 20. Moreover, according to Millennial Media, Android tablets have also started to become popular. Yes, the iPad is still the most popular among them, but now the Galaxy Tab and Kindle Fire are hanging on its tail.
As for the global supply of tablets, according to IDC specialists, which Millennial Media refers to in its research, they will reach 106 million devices by the end of 2012, and 198 million in 2016.
This is a very cautious forecast. NPD believes that by 2017 shipments of such gadgets will amount to a serious 383.3 million devices.
