Warner Bros. and a group of representatives of the English writer J. R. R. Tolkien Estate have entered into a settlement agreement on a lawsuit for $ 80 million.
The heirs of the intellectual property of the author of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” sued Warner Bros. in 2012.
Tolkien Estate claimed that the American media company violated the copyright agreement by releasing digital products under the Lord of the Rings brand, whereas the original contract allowed only “tangible” goods to be produced.
In a statement, Tolkien Estate highlighted LOTR-themed gambling, calling them “not only exceeding the agreed use of rights, but also causing irreparable harm to Professor Tolkien’s creative heritage and reputation.”
However, 5 years later, Warner Bros. and Tolkien Estate entered into a settlement agreement, the terms of which remained unknown.
The next game based on Tolkien’s work will be a role-playing action game Middle-earth: Shadow of War from Monolith Production. The release is scheduled for October this year.
