Ubisoft is known for games for dozens of hours — such as Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Odyssey. Why the scale of its projects continues to grow, said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
In an interview for Gamesindustry.
According to Guillemot, the 15-hour plot is not enough for players, they want to explore open worlds and get new content for the game for many years to come. That’s why Ubisoft is now trying to make games like Odyssey that include several Unity-level plots.
If you need a story for 15 hours, then you will get it. But you will get other stories along with it. You can literally live in the game world and strive for any goal that interests you. And our goal is to make sure that you will have Unity within Odyssey.

About a dozen Ubisoft divisions worked on both Unity and Odyssey. But if the scale of game worlds is growing, it means that the amount of work is also increasing. In such conditions, it was possible to expect an increase in prices for new games. But the cost of the basic versions of the same Assassin’s Creed remains the same (at $60). But Ubisoft is introducing new ways of post-release monetization: the sale of loot and boosters, virtual currency to accelerate progress, etc.

Nevertheless, Guillemot refers to Ubisoft’s ever-growing player base.
In this regard, he considers the creation of new games with even more content and their sale for the same price to be a sustainable model.
New markets are opening up for us, the life span of games is increasing. So we realize that we can invest more and more money in games — we know that in the long run investments will be repulsed.

Note that early next year Ubisoft will launch two ambitious projects. This is Watch Dogs: Legion, as well as the new IP Gods & Monsters.
