The founder of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, believes that casual genres are losing leadership on mobile platforms. In his opinion, gamers have outgrown the fascination with simple titles and expect a more comprehensive experience from mobile games. This trend is one of the main reasons for the success of Fortnite’s “battle royale” on mobile.

Sweeney said this in an interview with the British edition of MCV.

According to the game designer, many of those who started with casual games on mobile either stopped playing at all, or switched to more serious ones. Somewhere this process proceeds faster — Sweeney cited South Korea as an example, where mobile devices became a full-fledged platform for most players 3 years ago.

Answering a question about the complexity of touch control in a dynamic and competitive gameplay, Sweeney noted that it is a matter of habit that a new generation of players will quickly master.

“When the first part of Halo was released, I and many old PC gamers did not believe that a shooter could be played on a joypad no worse than using a keyboard and mouse. But now it’s completely natural,” Tim said.

Sweeney also believes that the request for complex mobile games gives a chance to all creators of cross-platform projects. According to him, modern multiplayer titles have become like social networks, where people have fun with big companies. Cross-platform allows them to stay together regardless of what devices the players own.
