The analytical platform Newzoo compared the audience composition of the two most popular “royal battles” — Fortnite Battle Royale and PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS. It turned out that PUBG is more often played by adults and independent gamers, and young people and students predominate among Fortnite fans.
Comparison of PUBG and Fortnite, Newzoo audiences
According to Newzoo, 60% of PUBG players are between the ages of 10 and 30.
The share of this age group among Fortnite players is slightly higher − 68%.
Fortnite is a little more popular than PUBG among students − 19% of those playing Epic Games are students of various educational institutions. Students make up only 12% of PUBG players.
PUBG is significantly ahead of Fortnite in terms of the number of employed players — 65% of Bluehole action movie players have a permanent job, while only half (50%) of Fortnite fans work.
In addition, the PUBG audience is generally more serious about video games. Almost a quarter (24%) of Fortnite players called themselves casual gamers, and only 17% turned out to be “casual” among PUBG fans.
Newzoo explains the differences in the audience of two games of the same genre by distribution models (Fortnite is free, and PUBG costs $30) and different visual stylistics — Fortnite attracts younger players due to bright graphics and funny animations, while PUBG focuses on realism and aesthetics of the “military” style.
As part of the Newzoo study, more than 60 thousand people were interviewed in 28 countries around the world.
