The Chinese corporation Tencent has acquired a controlling stake in the New Zealand studio Grinding Gear Games, known for its free-to-play role-playing online action movie Path of Exile.

The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

Grinding Gear Games reported that they are using the resources provided by Tencent to develop the Chinese version of the game, the open beta test of which started in August last year.

Representatives of Grinding Gear Games promised to maintain independence and freedom of creativity in the further development of Path of Exile.

They added that the company’s policy regarding microtransactions will remain the same: on international servers, players will be able to spend real money only on cosmetic items like special animation sets and exclusive pets.
