Spanish streamer Rubén Gundersen and 99 other video bloggers played the “battle Royale” Fortnite Battle Royale. The broadcast of their match on YouTube Live was simultaneously watched by over 1 million viewers. This is a record audience for a video game stream to date.
This is almost twice as much as the previous record-breaking Fortnite stream on Twitch on March 15, which was watched by over 600 thousand viewers. The success of that broadcast was largely due to the presence of the famous hip-hop artist Drake in it.
Gundersen and his colleagues managed to reach a larger audience without the participation of popular celebrities.
YouTube has officially confirmed to Polygon that Ruben Gunderson’s Fortnite stream has gathered a record audience among all game broadcasts on the YouTube Live platform.
The absolute record of online YouTube broadcasts belongs to the Austrian extreme Felix Baumgartner, who in 2012, as part of the Red Bull Stratos project, parachuted from a height of 36.6 kilometers. More than 8 million people watched the rise and flight of Baumgartner on YouTube at the same time.
