Snapchat messenger developer Snap Inc. has acquired the creators of the PlayCanvas game engine. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

PlayCanvas runs on a cloud platform and allows you to create games and applications directly in the browser. The engine belongs to open source software and is available on GitHub.

Snap Inc. does not disclose the purpose of the purchase of PlayCanvas. There are several assumptions on this score.

PlayCanvas can be used to expand the functionality of Snapchat’s AR capabilities, one of the business cards of which are “lenses” – virtual effects and filters superimposed on the image from the gadget’s camera.

It is also possible that Snap Inc. intends to integrate mini-games into the messenger, which can be played directly in the application without preloading. PlayCanvas has already been used to create similar titles for the Facebook messenger.
