Danish studio IO Interactive has confirmed the layoffs of employees after news of the withdrawal from the Japanese company Square Enix.

“We had to change the composition of the studio to better prepare for future events. It’s sad to say goodbye to talented colleagues and good friends. We are doing everything possible to support those affected by this decision,” IO Interactive said in an official statement.

Earlier, Square Enix announced that it intends to sell the studio-developer of the Hitman series and is already negotiating with potential buyers. If negotiations fail, Square Enix is ready to close IO Interactive.

Square Enix has owned IO Interactive since 2009, acquiring it as part of the Eidos Interactive publishing house.
