The new generation consoles have just gone on sale, but Newzoo has already prepared a report on the most popular games on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the USA. Sony’s audience traditionally prefers exclusives, while Microsoft users prefer subscription games and multiplatform.Note: The MAU data only counts players from the USA and is taken as of November 15.
The most popular games on PS5The top ten projects for MAU included four PlayStation exclusives at once, including Ghost of Tsushima, previously released on PS4.
- Astro’s Playroom attracted the most players — 52.6%.
- At the same time, it should be borne in mind that the project is pre-installed for free in all new Sony consoles and serves as a kind of demonstration of the capabilities of the new DualSense controller.In Spider-Man: Miles Morales, 36.1% of PS5 users played, and in the remake of Demon’s Souls — 15.8%.
- The top five also included several games from third-party developers: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (37.8%), NBA 2K21 (28.6%) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (23.1%).
- Two more Sony exclusives were in the top 20: God of War (16th place, 5.8%) and Days Gone (18th place, 4.3%).

The most popular games on Series X|S
The first two places were taken by the games of the Call of Duty series — Black Ops Cold War (34.8%) and Modern Warfare (26.3%).
- Forza Horizon 4 and Gears 5, Microsoft’s platform exclusives, took fifth and sixth place.
- Their popularity is also due to the company’s work on backward compatibility and improved graphics for new consoles.Microsoft’s bet on the Xbox Game Pass is starting to bear fruit: half of the games in the top 10 on MAU are available by subscription.

Newzoo calls the new generation the most exciting in terms of content, ecosystems, subscriptions and the introduction of new features like cloud gaming.
According to the company, the strategies of the two platform holders have never been so different, and therefore it can be especially interesting to watch the development of the PS5 and the Series X|S.
