The head of games at Microsoft, Phil Spencer, said that in the near future the company does not plan to develop its own game in the battle royale genre.
His comment is an answer to the question whether any internal Microsoft studio is developing a game in this genre, which was asked by one of Spencer’s Twitter followers.
Microsoft’s vice president of games said that “he doesn’t want to create a similar game just because others are working on similar ones.” He considers it more appropriate now to support existing projects like Fortnite and PUBG.
However, he did not completely rule out this possibility. But it will depend on whether any of the internal studios can offer Microsoft management “something special.”
Now there are rumors that such major market players as EA and Activision are working on their own royal battles. It is possible that the new Call of Duty and Battlefield will go exactly this way.
The niche of the Battle royale today cannot but attract the attention of major publishers. Earnings of top projects in the genre are astronomical. For example, if you trust the data of the analytical service SuperData, in March alone Fortnite brought Epic Games from all platforms $ 223 million.
So it’s not surprising that our colleagues from Videogamer think it’s quite possible scenario in which, despite Spencer’s assurances, Microsoft will soon offer its own reading of the new genre in series like Gears of War 5 or Halo 6.
