The authors of Pillars of Eternity will soon lose their independence. According to three sources of the Kotaku publication, the acquisition of Obsidian by Microsoft is at the final stage.

“The question is no longer whether they will buy it or not, the question is when,” one of the company’s employees told Jason Schreier, author of the book “Blood, Sweat and Pixels.”

The deal will give Obsidian stability and resources that it has never had since its founding in 2003. At the same time, the previous experience of cooperation between Obsidian and Microsoft cannot be called successful.

Recall that in 2012, Microsoft canceled Stormland, a role-playing exclusive for Xbox, after several years of development. This hit Obsidian hard and led to layoffs.

Officially, both sides refuse to comment on the current deal. However, one of the Microsoft employees told Kotaku that the corporation, as part of its campaign to increase the number of internal teams, which was announced at E3, is interested in strengthening the portfolio of PC projects, which Obsidian specializes in.
