Ace Combat is in many ways a unique franchise, and the release of the new installment has become an excellent opportunity to discuss the state of the flight game market. We have analyzed a large amount of data and prepared a detailed report—complete with illustrative tables, graphs, and some not-so-encouraging conclusions.

Let's begin with some facts about the overall state of the niche:

  • only 85 games with the 'Flight' tag have earned over a million dollars on Steam over time (out of nearly 5000 projects across all genres on the platform);
  • the share of flight games among all million-dollar games on Steam is less than 2%;
  • in 2026, 263 games with the 'Flight' tag were released, but only two (0.7%) earned more than a million dollars—and one of them is the new Ace Combat 8;
  • the flight game market is predictably skewed towards a small group of leaders, with almost no "middle class" in the niche—fewer than two dozen titles boast revenues of at least $10 million;

Before diving into the release metrics of Ace Combat 8 and sharing detailed insights into this market, let's revisit our previous reports on other genres and game categories.

Release of Ace Combat 8: Sales, Revenue, and Audience Feedback

There was significant interest in the new arcade flight simulators from Bandai Namco as soon as they were announced. In the end, just the Steam version amassed over a million wishlists, climbing to the 33rd spot among the most anticipated titles in the store by the time of release. Historically, Ace Combat has been a console franchise, appearing on PC for the first time only in 2019 with the release of the seventh installment.

Pre-orders for Ace Combat 8 were also quite active. The game has been on the global Steam charts for five consecutive weeks, and after its release, it debuted at number three (first among premium projects).
