Following our colleagues with PocketGamer.biz we have discovered a new trend: Clash of Clans is no longer an unambiguous box office leader. For example, in Russia, the box office of another strategy – Game of War – turned out to be larger in August.
With the help of the App Annie analytical service, we tracked the confrontation between Clash of Clans, Game of War and Clash of King, an ambitious clone of Game of War, in key markets from August 21 to September 21.
Clash of Clans
In Russia, over the past thirty-odd days, Clash of Clans has never topped the overall box office iPhone top. In the USA, the game is in a better position, but for 23 days out of 32, the game was in second position in the box office. As for Germany, the game was in the first place there for the entire time period.

On Google Play, the Supercell title is doing much better, but it is clear that the game has been consistently ranked first so far only in Germany.

The position of Game of War at the top of the American top on iOS was more constant (more than 20 days) than that of its main competitor. The same applies to its Russian indicators (the game was at the top for about 20 days). In Germany, Game of War has not reached the top yet, but most likely, this event will take place soon after all.

In Google Play, it is very interesting to trace how similar the behavior of the game is in the USA and Russia, while in Germany, the main achievement of Game of War on the Android platform is entering the top ten applications by revenue.

The Chinese clone of Game of War was not included in our selection by chance. Firstly, in Russia it competes with Game of War on equal terms. As for other markets, although the game is not yet included in the box office tens, it seems to be solidly pulling in Machine Zone revenues.

On Google Play, the potential of the Elex Wireless creation is more clearly visible.
The game in Russia has thrown both Game of War and Clash of Clans off the top at the moment. Also here Clash of Kings shows itself more aggressively in the USA and Germany.

Of course, if you look at the market as a whole, so far the leadership of Clash of Clans is not in doubt. The game (as of September 21) is in the first position of the iPhone store in 37 countries. Game of War boasts a similar position only in 7 regions (2 regions for Clash of Kings). The difference on Google Play is even greater: 76 vs. 3 vs. 8. However, it is clear that if Machine Zone and Elex Wireless continue to act so aggressively in the video advertising market, the gap can easily be reduced in the near future.
