Last week, Flappy Bird took first place among the free apps of the App Store and Google Play. The simplicity of the game’s graphics is compensated by a rather complex gameplay, which probably caused its popularity.
According to Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen from dotGears, the growth of downloads is not related to the promotion in any way, and the development of the game went naturally. At the same time, the game appeared on the App Store in May 2013, but only recently climbed to the top.
Sarah Young from NativeX shared her theory of how Flappy Bird captured the attention of gamers. In her opinion, the inevitable fail, coming in just a few seconds, forces the user to start the game over and over again. “It’s extremely addictive,” says Sarah.
In addition to the speed of gaming sessions, the competitive aspect, nostalgia for 8-bit Mario-style graphics, the inability to win and the virality of the game play a role.
