For Electronic Arts, monetization in games is not the main task. This was stated by EA Vice President for Finance Blake Jorgensen during the UBS Global Technology conference.

In the first place is the issue of player involvement, says Jorgensen. “Our game creation team is primarily thinking about how to engage players, what will keep users interested for a long time,” he comments. “This is not about the economic model; we will deal with the economy later.”

EA games are monetized in different ways. According to Jorgensen, the goal of any model is the same.

“It can be a subscription, a subscription with which the user receives additional content, or it can be a simple prepayment for a game to which additional content will be released later. In any case, we want the user to get something valuable for his money, and at the same time remain very passionate about something that he likes,” says Jorgensen.

EA’s vice president of Finance admits that the company uses not only subscriptions and prepayment, but also microtransactions, to which users have a contradictory attitude. However, he hopes that EA will solve the problem in the future.

“I think that users are a little tired of the fact that they are constantly trying to shake off more money. There are a lot of games that you can’t really play until you pay. Therefore, we are looking for such monetization methods that will relieve this fatigue. Perhaps it will be a subscription after all, or we can just come up with such formats of games that will not make you feel like you are constantly getting into your pocket,” sums up Jorgensen.
