The revenue from using the CryEngine engine will have to be shared. Crytek is preparing to introduce royalties in the amount of 5% of revenue from games created on CryEngine. The new rule will take effect in the new version of CryEngine 5.5, which is already available for download.
Crytek representatives announced the transition to a new business model at the GDC 2018 conference, which is taking place these days in San Francisco.
Royalties will not be charged immediately, but only after the CryEngine project earns more than $ 5 thousand.
If developers are already making a game on CryEngine versions 5.0 to 5.4, they can refuse to pay royalties, but in this case they will not be able to upgrade to version 5.5.
Crytek also announced a version of CryEngine for corporate use with the possibility of royalty redemption and user support packages.
Until now, the monetization of CryEngine has remained on the conscience of developers. Downloading and using the engine was free, but the developers could support the creators of CryEngine with any amount.
CryEngine 5.5: What’s new
According to Crytek representatives, the latest CryEngine update contains 260 updates and improvements.
In addition, Crytek announced the launch of its own certification program for developers using CryEngine. It includes the specializations of a technical artist, designer and programmer.
Program participants can take tests and prove their competence in using CryEngine.
A similar program was launched last year for users of the Unity engine.
