People with a penchant for gambling should not be allowed to the loot boxes, says a Reddit user with the nickname Kensgold. He told how he spent more than $10 thousand over the past two years on game content. He managed to break with addiction only thanks to a psychotherapist.
According to Kensgold, he is 19 years old. The young man started buying game content for money 5 years ago. First it was mobile games, then loot boxes with skins for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. To satiate his mania for spending money in games, Kensgold got two jobs and even wanted to drop out of school.
In the end, everything ended relatively well. The mother of the author of the letter convinced him to undergo therapy, which partially relieved his cravings for loot boxes. But now Kensgold avoids microtransaction games in order not to break down again.
For this reason, he did not play Star Wars Battlefront II, because of which the problem of loot boxes reached the level of international discussion.
Kensgold wants Electronic Arts and other developers who monetize games through loot boxes to find out about his problem.
“I’m not blaming EA or anyone else from the publishers, I’m responsible for my own actions. But microtransactions are not as harmless as many people think. My story is an example of what unregulated microtransactions can lead to. I want game creators to understand this and, if possible, protect children from the temptation to spend money in games,” Kensgold wrote.
