Information that Amazon is preparing its own service for “playing in the cloud” appeared back in 2019. Now it has come to the announcement. At an event dedicated to hardware, Amazon announced the launch of the Luna service.
Amazon has not yet announced the exact launch date of the service, but users from the United States can already request early access. It is unknown whether an international release will take place.
What is already known about Luna
- the principle of operation of Luna is simple — the player buys a subscription and gets access to the game library. In this library there are several “catalogs”-channels containing different games;
- At the early access stage, a basic subscription to the Luna Plus channel will cost $5.99. There will be more than 100 titles on it, including Resident Evil 7, Control, Panzer Dragoon, A Plague Tale: Innocence and others. In addition, under this subscription, up to two people can use the service at a time;
- Later, a channel with Ubisoft games will appear in Luna. Subscribers will be able to launch Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Immortals: Fenyx Rising on release day. What other channels will be launched on the service is not yet reported;
- The cloud service’s “favorite games” will support 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Luna will work through Amazon’s AWS web platform;
- Luna will also get integration with Twitch. According to the idea, gamers will be able to instantly launch the game directly from the stream, if it is in the library of the service;
- you will be able to play in the service using the mouse, keyboard or Bluetooth controller;
- Separately, Amazon announced its own Luna Controller. The company claims that the controller supports the Alexa voice assistant and connects directly to the cloud. Switching between devices will not require additional settings, and the data transfer delay will be 17-30 milliseconds. The price of the Luna Controller at the early access stage is $49.99;
- The service will appear on several platforms at once: PC, Mac, Fire TV, iPhone and iPad. Later it is planned to launch a version for Android devices as well. Note that to “play in the cloud” on iOS, gamers will have to open not the App Store, but the built—in browser – among other things, this makes it possible for Amazon to circumvent Apple‘s rules for cloud games.
