Unreal Engine developer has acquired another technology startup. Epic Games has announced the purchase of Cubic Motion Studio. The latter specializes in capturing facial animation in real time and integrating it into game projects.
The terms of the transaction are unknown. However, Cubic Motion says that the company will continue to provide services to those teams who want to get “compelling digital characters.”
The Manchester-based studio is primarily known for its work on Hellblade. She was responsible for capturing the facial animation of the main character — a girl suffering from psychosisSenua, played by Melina Jurgens. Cubic Motion also worked on a series of games Call of Duty, Spider-Man, God of War and Until Dawn.
For Epic Games, this is not the first acquisition specializing in the correct display of faces. In January last year, the company acquired Studio 3Lateral, which focuses on creating characters and creatures. Among other things, she is engaged in simulating muscles, wool and fabrics, as well as rigging faces.
It is reported that after the current deal, Cubic Motion and 3Lateral will start working closely with each other. Epic Games hopes that thanks to their joint efforts, digital models of people will become even more realistic.
To overcome the effect of the sinister valley, facial animation is necessary, taking into account the smallest nuances of human facial expressions. We believe that combining the capabilities of Unreal Engine, 3Lateral and Cubic Motion is the only way to solve this problem.
