Sony Corporation is increasing production of PlayStation Move motion controllers to promote the PlayStation VR virtual reality helmet. Its closest competitor in the person of Microsoft’s Kinect system dropped out of the race the day before.

Director of the VR product development division at Sony’s London office, Stuart Whyte, said that Sony is tracking the number of owners of PlayStation Move controllers and hopes to increase it as the base of PSVR owners grows.

White noted that two-thirds of PlayStation VR games support or require Move. As more titles from other virtual reality platforms are coming to PSVR, the need for a controller will also grow.

He added that over the year of PlayStation VR’s existence, more than 140 applications have been released on the market for this system, 75% of which are games. White believes that virtual reality systems will most often be bought for the sake of games.

Note that Microsoft also uses the Kinect system’s achievements to develop its own mixed reality system Microsoft Hololens and other projects.
