Yesterday, April 24, it became known that Unity no longer plans to support Flash. App2Top reflects on the consequences of this step.

The fact that the authors of one of the most popular engines “waved a pen” Flash in the official Unity blog was written by the company’s executive director David Helgason: “18 months ago, we pinned great hopes on Flash as a gaming platform. The performance of the early builds was promising and Adobe seemed to be putting a lot of effort into making them successful. However, a lot has changed since then.”

By “many” Helgason most likely meant Adobe Systems’ refusal to support Flash Player in Android-based mobile devices in August last year.

In any case, in the new versions of Unity, developers will no longer have the opportunity to throw their game into a Flash wrapper. Most likely, they will have to use Silverlight.

Will this move hit mobile developers? We think not. Most of them have long since abandoned Flash. Apple refused to work with this platform from the very beginning of the “mobile era”. Its performance on Android has always left much to be desired.

And here a new question arises: does anyone need Flash at all today? And if so, for what?

Any ideas? We are waiting for comments!
