Sales of Windows Mixed Reality helmets from Microsoft may overtake Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets this quarter, according to Stephanie Llamas, vice president of the SuperData analytics company.

According to Llamas’ forecast, Microsoft headset sales in the fourth quarter will outpace Oculus Rift by a ratio of two to one and beat HTC Vive by about 10%.

“Microsoft has made a great start as a direct competitor for Oculus and Vive. Their brand is widely known, and the price of $400-$500 is available to the consumer,” Stephanie said.

Llamas noted the functionality of Microsoft’s MR devices on computers with weak hardware, while its rivals need expensive and powerful hardware configurations to work.

Another positive factor for Microsoft is the compatibility of their new products with Steam VR.

In addition, the company announced a free Halo Recruit game for Windows Mixed Reality. It will be released simultaneously with the device on October 17.
