The production of the new Fable has turned out to be more expensive than Playground Games and Microsoft initially anticipated. This is reported by Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, citing his sources.

Corden did not disclose the current budget of the game but noted that the final amount "unpleasantly" exceeded the initial plan.

Whether Fable will now be able to recoup its costs is unclear. According to the journalist, Microsoft had previously hoped that their multiplatform strategy, releasing the game not only on Xbox and PC but also on PlayStation, would help. However, it was recently revealed that just days before Fable’s debut, another major release, God of War: Laufey, will be launched. Corden believes it could significantly impact Fable’s sales on Sony consoles.

"The release date choice is another instructive reminder of how self-destructive Xbox's multiplatform strategy could remain for a long time," Corden concluded.

Neither Playground Games nor Microsoft commented on Windows Central’s information.

The release of Fable is expected on February 23, 2027.
