One of the oldest MMORPGs — RuneScape — is gaining popularity. Thanks to this, the income of the Jagex developer has been growing for the fifth year. In 2019, the company earned a record $137.6 million.

This figure is 19.4% higher than Jagex’s revenue for 2018. Operating profit also increased to $60.3 million, which is 4.5% more in annual terms.

As explained in Jagex, RuneScape has become more profitable due to the fact that subscriptions on PC and mobile in it have reached an unprecedented high level. In addition, the peak DAU was recorded at the offshoot game – Old School RuneScape. It has been downloaded 8 million times in 7 years.

The audience of RuneScape itself reached 250 million users by 2018. The game will turn 20 years old in January 2021.

According to Pocket Gamer, last year Jagex invested “record amounts” in the development of RuneScape. The exact size of the investment is not specified.

In April of this year, the company was sold to the American holding company Macarthur Fortune for $ 530 million. The new owner promised to invest in MMORPG marketing and further development of Jagex. As a result, the studio is planning new games, actively hiring employees and looking for partners, according to its statement. She is not yet spreading more details about her plans.
