The net profit of the publisher of the Pokémon franchise in 2017 decreased by 55%, but still became the second largest in the history of the company. This was reported by game analyst Serkan Toto, referring to information from the Japanese government publication Official Gazette.
According to Toto, The Pokémon Company made $80.8 million in profit last year. This is noticeably less than the result of 2016, when the publisher of the media franchise about pocket monsters closed the annual period with a record $145.6 million profit.
The explosive growth of an important financial indicator in 2016 was provided by the huge success of the Niantic studio’s Pokémon Go mobile game, as well as the successful sales of Pokemon Sun/Moon titles for the Nintendo 3DS handheld console.
In 2017, the Pokemon boom began to decline. Despite the fact that Pokémon GO continued to earn well ($890 million for 2017 according to SuperData), and The Pokémon Company released new parts of Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon, the success of 2016 could not be repeated.
Nevertheless, thanks to Pokémon Go, last year’s net profit of The Pokémon Company turned out to be higher than the sum of the company’s annual profits from 2008 to 2016. It should be noted that in this time period the company twice ended the year with losses.
The Pokémon Company is a Nintendo subsidiary responsible for publishing and distributing games and anime based on the popular pocket monster franchise.
