The analytical firm SuperData has compiled a rating of the best-selling VR helmets for the 4th quarter of 2019. She also made a forecast for the augmented reality (XR) market. In three years, its turnover will reach $14.9 billion.
Immediately note: SuperData lowered expectations for the XR market. At the beginning of last year, analysts promised the industry $34 billion in turnover by 2022. That report is not available right now.
The current forecast is more modest. According to him, AR/MR devices and software for them will provide almost half of the revenue of $14.9 billion to the augmented reality market. Corporate Hololens glasses are given as an example. It is expected that in 2023, the AR/MR market will finally form technical standards and price categories available to a wide range of consumers. As a result, sales of AR/MR products (both hardware and software) will reach $6.7 billion.
Sales of VR headsets
SuperData also published an infographic on the best-selling VR helmets in the past quarter. PlayStation VR helmets diverged best of all. A comparable number of Oculus Quest devices were also sold. Closes the top three of the Valve Index.
Sales of Valve Index skyrocketed in the 4th quarter thanks to the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx. Valve sold 103 thousand copies of Index in three months, despite the fact that for the whole year it sold 149 thousand such helmets.
However, this is significantly less than the annual sales of Oculus Quest. The wireless headset has sold 705 thousand units. This is more than the total sold edition of Oculus Go and Oculus Rift S.
Analysts do not provide data on annual sales of PlayStation VR in pieces.
