Russians are spending more and more on video games in retail. At the same time, for those who buy games on physical media, the main platform is Sony PlayStation 4. This was stated in its report for the first quarter of 2019 by the group of companies “M.Video-El Dorado”.

General situation

  • during the quarter, 610 thousand copies of games were sold at retail in the amount of 1.15 billion rubles (a 10% increase compared to the same quarter a year earlier);
  • console games remain the main sales driver.

Consoles

  • games for Sony PlayStation 4 are responsible for 75% of retail game sales. Revenue from them increased by 15% (in units, the growth was 8%);
  • Sales of Xbox One games continue to grow. In money, sales increased by 17% (in units, the increase was 15%);
  • The Nintendo Switch games show a very good pace. The company earned 45% more on them in the quarter than a year earlier (in units, the growth was 50%).

PC

  • sales of PC games increased by 80%. Positive dynamics within this niche was recorded for the first time in five years. All thanks to new releases and a 2.5-fold reduction in the average price of games;
  • in physical terms, PC games on physical media account for only 10% of sales;
  • the demand for digital content for PC games is growing. During the quarter, sales of add-ons, game currency and digital versions in the retail market increased 2.4 times in pieces and by 60% in money.
