In 2018, the Russian console market showed strong growth. The best dynamics were shown not by modern devices, but by retro consoles. This was reported in “M.Video-Eldorado”.
- During the year, sales of retro consoles increased by 45%. We are talking about PlayStation Classic, SEGA Mega Drive Gopher, Nintendo Classic Mini NES and SNES. Russians bought about 100 thousand of these consoles. (The volume of the entire console market was 640 thousand devices sold.)
- Sales of the Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES were the highest. But in percentage terms, they increased slightly when compared with 2017. But the NES sales have tripled, although it could not reach the SNES in terms of the number of devices sold.
- The SEGA Mega Drive Gopher demonstrates the most positive growth dynamics among retro consoles. Last year it sold four times better than in 2017.
- As stated in “M.Video”, first of all, the growth in demand for consoles of the 80-90s is due to the current trend. Secondly, their cheapness.
Russians highly appreciated the reissued consoles, which will help to return to childhood for a short time and plunge back into the world of hits that they grew up on. In addition, they are distinguished from modern consoles by a relatively small price.
The retailer noted that the interest of Russians in retro consoles helped Nintendo to increase its market share in Russia by almost one and a half times over the year. The good sales of the Nintendo Switch also played a role in this, for which a number of 8-bit and 16-bit titles were reissued.
