In Russia, most of the physical retail is behind projects for PlayStation 4.
Group of companies “M.Video-Eldorado” shared the results of 2018 for the Russian retail video game market.
The main figures of the report
- Russians purchased 2.2 million copies of video games in retail last year (annual growth of 5%);
- in monetary terms, this is 4.5 billion rubles or $71.7 million, based on the weighted average dollar exchange rate for 2018 (in rubles, an annual growth of 13%);
- the bulk of sales came from games for PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch (their combined share in pieces is 80%, and in money — 90%);
- 70% of the market in pieces and 75% of the market in money for PlayStation 4 games (demand growth — 30%);
- sales of Xbox One games for the year increased by 16% in pieces and by 23% in money;
- the sales growth rates of Nintendo Switch games are higher than the market average (they grew 2.5 times in pieces and 2.2 times in money);
- for games for Nintendo Switch — 7% of the Russian video game market (in money);
- for PC games — 5% of the Russian video game market
Also in “M.Video-Eldorado” noted a 65% increase in VR glasses for the Sony console and a 45% increase in sales of DualShock gamepads for it. The Group of Companies is also very pleased with the growth in sales of digital codes and online services in general. It amounted to 37% in monetary terms.

Russians prefer to buy football simulators for consoles. There are already two positions in the top five most popular video games for both PlayStation and Xbox — behind the FIFA series from Electronic Arts.

In his report “M.Video-Eldorado” reminded how many consoles were sold in the country in a year. According to the group of companies, 640 thousand consoles worth 12.5 billion rubles ($199 million) were sold in Russia in 2018. Thus, the growth in pieces was 26%, and in money — 30%.
Of all the consoles sold, about 60% were on PlayStation 4. Xbox One was in second place in sales, and Nintendo Switch was in third place, whose sales doubled compared to the year before last.
