The Japanese gaming corporation gumi has invested $ 4.5 million in the company inXile Entertainment of game designer Brian Fargo and his new VR project.
The investment will partially cover the development of the next VR game inXile, an open-world survival simulator for all high-end virtual reality platforms.
In addition, in exchange for the investment, gumi will acquire a stake in the studio, and gumi CEO Hironao Kunimitsu joins the board of directors of inXile Entertainment.
Fargo said that he intends to build on the success of the latest VR role-playing title Mage’s Tale, released on the Oculus Rift platform on June 20 this year.
He added that, unlike the previous inXile games (Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3), the project he conceived will not be able to be funded by crowdfunding.
“I don’t think the market is big enough to raise money for a virtual reality project. This is my opinion. Someone can come and prove me wrong, but he doesn’t feel like he’s still there,” Fargo said.
It is noteworthy that in March of this year, Brian Fargo promised to retire from game development and retire after the release of Wasteland 3, which is scheduled for release in 2019.
