Square Enix’s revenues in fiscal year 2017 amounted to ¥257 billion ($2.2 billion) — this is 20% more than last year.
The company’s annual profit increased by 23% to ¥31 billion ($271 million), despite extraordinary losses of ¥4.8 billion ($43 million) due to the decision to abandon IO Interactive.
According to Square Enix, both amounts are a record for the company.
Most of Square Enix’s revenue came from sales of games and content for them (in the company, this segment is called Digital Entertainment). Segment revenues amounted to ¥199 billion ($1.7 billion), an increase of 25%.
Square Enix’s biggest launches this year were Rise of the Tomb Raider on PlayStation 4 and Final Fantasy XV on multiple platforms.
Square Enix also noted a decline in MMORPG revenue, mainly due to a lack of new content.
Profits from mobile and browser games, on the contrary, have increased thanks to such franchises as Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy.
