The number of downloads of mobile games will grow to 60 billion by 2018, – says the analytical company IDC.
During the research conducted by the company, it turned out that the number of mobile devices used for games in the world has grown to 1 billion (44% of the total number of smartphones and tablets).
“The mobile games industry is now the brightest star in the gaming sky,” said Lewis Ward, director of the gaming research department at IDC. – The number of games that users will download to their smartphones and tablets will increase to 60 billion in the period from 2014 to 2018. <…> The market as a whole will grow and dramatically change direction, reorienting towards Android devices and the Asian/Pacific region.”
Another part of the study suggests that online multiplayer is most likely the key to success in mobile game development.
IDC found out that games that support multiplayer mode are monetized much better than singleplayers. The same applies to projects that support the possibility of cyber tournaments.
