According to the results of the first quarter of 2012, Android continues to dominate the world in smartphone sales. Read below about the popularity of Android devices in local markets and the reasons for the growth of the share of Windows Phone.
Kantar analysts, having studied the largest smartphone markets, came to the conclusion that, on average, 64.2% of smartphones sold in the world cost Android. However, the percentage ratio varies greatly from market to market. For example, in Spain, 93.5% of all sales are accounted for by this OS, and in Japan – only 45.8% (against 49.2% for the iPhone).
According to Kantar forecasts, in the future Android will only strengthen its position as a leader in the global market, including by expanding the geography of sales of Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One, which will displace BlackBerry, Nokia and, possibly, Apple devices from the market.
Despite the powerful launch of the iPhone 5 in the US, iOS now controls only 43.7% of the market against 49.3% for Android. The only platform for which, as well as for the “Bucket”, sales growth in the American market is characteristic is Windows Phone. During the year, the OS rose by 1.9 points and took a share of 5.6% of the market.
In European countries, Microsoft’s share in the mobile market is even higher – 6.5%, that is, only three times less than the iPhone currently occupies (19.4%).
What is the reason for this success? Analyst Mary-Ann Parlato believes that in a successful advertising campaign, which was aimed at users who want to buy their first smartphone. She justified herself, 52% of American Windows Phone users used ordinary cell phones before meeting her.
For comparison, 55% of iPhone users and 51% of Android users switched to them from other smartphones. Considering that more than half of the current US and Canadian market accounts for conventional “handsets”, Windows Phone has a lot to grow.
