Apple has banned the use of the word “memory” in the name of applications, the Gamasutra portal reports, citing developers who have already received a notification from the Apple company.
As journalists of the British edition found out, the ban was initiated by the German company Ravensburger, which has the rights to the word “memory” in a number of European countries, where it sells a “very popular” board game called Memory.
At the moment, two independent teams have confirmed information about Apple’s letter in which it asks to remove or rename the application containing this word in its name to Gamasutra portal. At the same time, there have been no official comments from Apple or Ravensburger yet.
Darren Murtha, one of the authors of Preschool Memory Match, said that he had to remove his application from all 42 markets because of this notification. There was no time to re-upload under a different name, at the moment Darren is busy with a new application.
The ban on the use of the word “memory” does not apply to the United States, but is relevant for Austria, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and Venezuela.
